Franklin Falls Hike

This weekend we were treated with some amazing weather. DH loves to explore and suggested we go on a hike. He wanted to go to Franklin Falls. We headed out--in shorts since it was 73 degrees at our house. Well, Franklin Falls is 22 miles away toward the mountain pass. When we arrived at the trail head it was 57 degrees. Most of the kids had jackets so we decided to go for it. There was snow on the trail! Here is DH and the kids at the start of the hike:
Miranda's class had been here for a field trip in the fall. She informed us this was the narrowest part of the trail. Thank goodness! It couldn't have been much more narrow. Literally, we had to step over a small crevice--I'm wondering if that part of the trail will even be there much longer.DH loves seeing old growth. It bothers him that so much has been cut down. When we saw this huge tree I had to take a photo of them spread around it.With some run-off from the mountains, there were a ton of little streams. The kids loved seeing them and kept asking me to take pictures of them. This particular one, Bird dubbed "Fairy Creek".
As we got closer to the falls we could hear the traffic on I-90. This photo is right at the end of the trail. I-90 is just to the left of the falls. (This is for you, Mom). I couldn't help but wonder how they built this bridge, getting the equipment to this location, after just making that hike.Coming down to the falls was beautiful! There was a rainbow over the trail. This is my favorite shot from the hike.

The falls are 70 feet high. It was pretty misty down by them. We stopped for a few minutes and let the kids eat a snack. I can only imagine how fun it would be to go here in the summer on a hot day!
As we turned around to head back up the trail, we were treated with this beautiful view of the river.
The trail is a relatively easy hike--pretty flat with a few inclines and two miles round trip. It follows the old wagon trail used to come over the mountains long ago. Our kids did it without a problem (other than slipping in the snow). Merek rode in the backpack. I don't think he would have made it walking--maybe in two years. A fun and entertaining family event :)

Your photography is amazing...and seeing the children with their bare legs in the snow makes me realize how kids can stand more cold then us grown ups.

What a cool outing! Your waterfall/rainbow shot is a great one, but I am just in awe of that huge tree. I've never personally seen one that big!
